Design of industrial robot

Robots have to be practical: fast, reliable and offer high performance. How they look should be the least important thing. But nowadays this is not true. For KUKA appearance of their product is important. So they are collaborating closely with Industrial designer Mario Selic. He is responsible for the shape of current robots (design is protected by proper patents). It is worth to visit his website! Sometimes you could spot things which don’t have an official announcement yet (like a SmartPad 2).

KUKA teach pendant – smart pad

I mentioned the characteristic operation panel which was recently refreshed. You already know who design it, but who is a producer? KUKA orders teach pendants at company RAFI GmbH & Co. KG . They already produced over one hundred thousand units of first-generation SmartPad.

Name of the company

I heard different explanations of the company name. My favourite tells that KUKA stands from Kraft Und Keine Ahnung ( strength and no idea 😉 ). In reality the company name, KUKA, is an acronym for Keller und Knappich Augsburg.

The company was founded in 1898 in Augsburg, Germany, by Johann Josef Keller and Jacob Knappich. Now is owned by Midea Group – Chinese electrical appliance manufacturer.
